Webcomic 'Penny Arcade' Creator is Transphobic and Doesn't Care

For those who don't know, Penny Arcade is a wildly successful site that started out as a mere webcomic and has become a real player (see what I did there) in the video game community. They are also responsible for the PAX convention, a gaming-exclusive conventions, which takes place in three cities (Seattle, Boston, and Melbourne).

A couple of days ago, this happened: Ugh.

Recently on twitter, co-creator Gabe (real name Mike Krahulik) went on a tirade about trans women and how you're only a real woman if you have a vagina. He was horrible. I've liked Penny Arcade in the past, but after this, I really can't continue to look at it.

The article above selects some things from his twitter, but you can see the whole thing here. He also posted an exchange where his friend, a trans woman, told him she was uncomfortable with what he said and while he sort of apologized, he also didn't really. That can be viewed here.

My favorite line in the whole exchange is probably this:

Wanna be a guy or a girl or a fox or whatever and I will be happy to treat you that way.

But I think that is very different from the physical reality of your human body.

I think you’re awesome and super talented. I have no idea what your body parts are and I don’t want to know. I will treat you as a woman if that’s how you present yourself to me.

I hate the idea that because I think boys and girls have different parts I am “transphobic” that pisses me off it makes me angry and so I lash out.

Missing the point much, Gabe?
