I'm currently sitting in on a panel called "Bringing Down the Gender Walls", which features Indian and Pakistani writers and academics. Two seconds in I wished that there was a way to share the panel with GT. Amina Yaqin is discussing her research into dolls, and specifically the Muslim "Barbie Doll" (not an actual Matell doll), which is fascinating. They've also discussed the history of women's writings in India, and what sounds like a proto-feminist movement, and the writings of lower class women who angrily pushed back against the upper class women writers, because of their participation in a caste system that oppressed others. Sound familiar? Fascinating stuff. Wish you were here.
