I really wanted to include the VH1 Storytellers version of Jewel singing "Who Will Save Your Soul" on my mix CD, not because I love it, but because I think it is funny. I didn't have room for more funny songs on my mix (I do, however, still have a songs from Animaniacs and the Spanish speaking production of Rocky Horror Picture Show), ergo Jewel didn't make the cut (neither did Lindsay Lohan *sob*).
I had only ever heard it and thought "Wow, she is trying really hard." She scats all over the place and she sort of spars with the guitarist. She is doing every trick I think she knows how to. Well, she doesn't yodel, but, otherwise, it's all there. It is Mariah/Christina type showing off, but folkier and jazzier. And I think it shows more breadth of talent than, say, A Night Without Armor. I kid, I kid.
Imagine my surprise when I found a video of that performance on YouTube! She does a lot of what I think is supposed to be sexy, but I am unclear. Also, there is a lot of shimmying. A lot. It is a late 90s delight. I used to wear my make-up like that all the time (Not surprisingly, it is the Jewel modeled make-up in Kevyn Aucoin's Making Faces). She is dressed like an extra on Charmed, like a demon extra. And the audience seems to be contractually obligated to sit with their hands in their laps and their legs crossed. Sometimes, they all clap and woo, but I often don't know why.
But, the very, very best part is at the end when she starts singing about the kitty (about 5:08). When I hear this song, I always think about the kitty and its meow, meow, meow.
