As many of you may be aware, a Minnesota psychopath by the name of Byron Smith is no longer walking the streets after a jury of his peers found him guilty of slaying two teens in his home. He claimed self-defense after a series of break-ins had occurred at his home and I'm very happy a jury decided that it was not self-defense.
If you haven't heard about this story, Byron Smith is a 65-year old male who, after a series of break-ins at his home, feared about being killed by intruders. So he took matters into his own hands.
On Thanksgiving in 2012, he saw a neighbor he suspected of doing the break-ins and decided to pull his truck somewhere to make it look like no one was home. Then he returned home, set up a tarp, got two guns, a novel, some bottled water, and some energy bars and waited in what prosecutors describe as a "deer stand" in his basement. He also set up an audio recorder just in case he died so that police could find the intruders.
That's when cousins Haile Keifer (18) and Nick Brady (17) broke into his home.
Police determined that Haile and Nick were most likely breaking in looking for drugs or stuff which could be pawned for drugs.
Nick was the first one to enter the basement. He was shot twice and can be heard groaning on the audio recording (which can be heard here) but falls silent after a third "finishing" shot kills him. You can then hear Byron saying, "You're dead."
A few moments later, Haile calls for Nick and heads to the basement. Byron fires a shot at her then his gun jams. He apologizes and Haile screams "Oh my god" and Byron uses his second gun to fire four more times and says, "You're dead bitch."
A sixth and final "finishing" shot can be heard a few moments later.
I'm glad that Minnesota has convicted this guy and I hope he never sees the light of day as a free man again.
Anyone who can "execute" another person in cold blood after already shooting them multiple times does not deserve to live as a free person.
Yes, what Haile and Nick did (breaking into his house) was bad, but last time I checked, execution isn't punishment for a break-in.
All the castle doctrine people are crying over what this means for their rights to kill someone in their own home. Well you know what? Fuck you.
