No, I don't have a boyfriend. I don't have a girlfriend. I don't have a friend with benefits. I am very single right now! But it doesn't matter and has never mattered to me whether or not I have a Valentine on Valentine's Day. Because I don't understand why Valentine's Day has to be so focused on romantic love only. Even though I enjoy that part of it as well. I love Valentine's Day because I love ~love~ of any kind.

I have always thought of Valentine's Day as just an extra special day of the year to remind all the loved people in your life that you care for them. Yes, you shouldn't need a marked day on a calendar to do that. But it doesn't mean that you can't enjoy giving extra affection and attention and praise to anyone who you might not remember to do so as often as they deserve it!

On Valentine's Day I remind all the people I care for, my mother, my brother, my whole family and my friends that I love them deeply. I tell my mother that she does so much for me, too much, and she deserves a more grateful daughter. My mother tells me that she loves me just the way I am. I tell all of my family who gives me kindness and support that I appreciate it and they return the appreciation to me. I try to let my friends know that they mean quite a lot to me too! Even my internet friends, so to all of you I give all the heart-shaped hugs and kisses.

Even on a day coated in sugary sweetness, if there isnt anyone in your life to share it with, romantic or not, can't Valentine's Day also be a celebration of love for oneself? For all the stress and anxiety, for how hard you can be on yourself when you feel you don't meet expectations, maybe a day devoted to love and caring can be extended to love and caring for yourself.

I dunno, I am a sappy ~love~ loving fool. I want everyone to have some kind of love year round, but I also want a day that is meant to be about love to be celebrated by everyone. Maybe I am a pawn of the greeting card and chocolate companies, fooling me into believing pink and red are the colors of love of all kinds and romance. I love holidays, and love the holiday about love so much.
