Golden Anniversaries

Congrats to Major General Valentina Tereshkova on the 50th anniversary of her history-making spaceflight. She circled the world 48 times over her three days aboard the Vostok 6 only two years after Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space. The official Soviet report described smooth sailing, but she later admitted a number of glitches, technical errors, communications failures, and an in-suit barfing incident. Gen. Tereshkova should be celebrating right now at an official reception hosted by everyone's favorite former KGB agent, Pooty-poot. Na zdorovie! She's 76, but still looks quite formidable, no?

Golden Anniversaries

Unfortunately, after her milestone, the Soviet Union never really made an effort to integrate women into their space program, and only three more have been able to follow her. NASA's done a little better, and in 2010, the greatest number of women in orbit at one time was set at 4 aboard the International Space Station.
