My hippie father always had music playing in the house when I was growing up. He was often found belting out the tunes from Jesus Christ Superstar with his headphones on, or watching The Last Waltz late into the night when the pain stopped him from sleeping. Sometimes, he'd let me sit up with him, at least for a little while.
If I had to pick one modern band that changed me, truly changed me and the way I related to music, it would be The Band. More than the Beatles, probably even more than my beloved Queen or David Bowie, The Band still resonates in a way that I have never culled from another musician or group. Besides, who else could make such a moving, impeccable song about King Lear?
